What is this?
What is Death and Dialog? At heart, it’s a sort of meme image generator.
More specifically: there were a number of games made during the 1980s and 1990s (especially by Sierra On-Line) that featured regular and recurrent death as a staple of gameplay. Step off the wrong path here, not react quick enough there, and the game would admonish you with a screen reminding you of all that you did wrong – and remind you to save early, save often.
Death and Dialog is very heavily inspired by Foone’s Death Generator, but branching out beyond ‘death screens’ from games (just as the Death Generator itself has).
We have categorised the entries in the following way:
- Death – a screen letting you know that all was not well and that, sadly, you died
- Dialog – from a conversation between characters in a game
- Intro – something from a game’s introduction screens
- Outro – something from a game’s winning (or other non-death finish) screen
- Other – for the things that aren’t the above
Some games might have multiple different generators going on depending on what struck us while playing them…
All games are owned by their respective rights holders, and we are not claiming any ownership – these are parodies, transformative works, etc. of the original.
